Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Celebrated in Stained Glass

Stained Glass Representing St. Kateri Tekakwitha
Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized a saint on October 21, 2012, the first female Native American saint. Born in 1656 to a Mohawk chief in what is now central New York state, Kateri Tekakwitha grew up in the Mohawk tradition, but under the influence of her Christian Algonquin mother. Her name, Tekakwitha, is translated to mean “she who bumps into things,” and was given to her because of her poor eyesight, the result of smallpox as a young child, which also disfigured her face. Tekakwitha survived the terrible disease, but her parents did not. She was raised by her uncle, who expected her to marry, and to live a traditional life. As a teenager, Tekakwitha embraced Christianity, but her uncle strongly objected, due to his belief that Christians had brought smallpox to his people. Finally however, he allowed Tekakwitha to become a Christian, providing she stay in her village.

Scorned and persecuted by her people for her Christian beliefs, at one point Tekakwitha’s very life was threatened. She eventually did leave her village, joining the St. Francis Xavier Canadian community of Native American Christians in Kahnawake. Devoted to teaching and caring for others, she lived a chaste and holy life. When she died from illness at only 24 years old, those at her deathbed testified that the pockmarks disappeared and her face was radiant and lovely. She has become a revered saint for Native Americans and other Catholics and her shrine in Auriesville, New York is visited by thousands of devotees each year. Her feast day is celebrated on July 14.
