St. Athanasius

St. Athanasius of Alexandria is also known as Athanasius the Great and Athanasius the Apostolic. He is a noteworthy Egyptian leader of the fourth century, a Christian theologian, Church Father and defender of the church against doctrinal heresy. His particular life struggle was to refute the heresy of Arius who denied the divinity of Christ. St. Athanasius was Bishop of Alexandria for forty-five years, with over seventeen of those years being spent in exile, during the reign of four different Roman Emperors. After an honorable life of virtue and suffering, he died in 373 AD at the age of seventy-seven. His feast day is commemorated on May 2nd. St. Athanasius is often depicted in church art and stained glass where he is seen as a bishop holding an open book, or standing over a defeated heretic.
