St. Carmen

The name of St. Carmen is derived from Carmel and in fact refers to Our Lady of Mount Carmel which is one of the titles given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order. During the twelfth century the first Carmelites started their order on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. They were Christian hermits who built a chapel and dedicated it to Our Lady of Carmel. Her feast day is July 16th which is also the feast day of the “Scapular of Mount Carmel”. A scapular is a type of work apron usually used by monks. According to tradition, in 1251 Our Lady of Mount Carmel appeared to St. Simon Stock who was the General of the Carmelites and showed him a brown scapular saying, “This is for you and yours a privilege; the one who dies in it will be saved.” Images of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in stained glass windows sometimes depict her holding the scapular.
