St. Catherine of Alexandria

According to tradition, St. Catherine of Alexandria was the daughter of the pagan King and Queen of Alexandria. As a princess she is often depicted in stained glass art as being richly dressed, standing next to a segment of broken wheel representing the instrument of torture on which she was martyred. She became a devout Christian in her teenage years, combining her great intelligence with diligent study. She committed herself to remain a virgin all her life, and received a vision in which the Virgin Mary gave her to Christ in a mystical marriage. When she refused marriage to the Roman Emperor Maxentius on condition that she renounce her faith, he put all her followers to death and eventually Catherine too died at his hands. It is St. Catherine’s voice (among others) which St. Joan of Arc heard guiding her in her brave deeds. St. Catherine is the patron saint of philosophers and preachers and her feast day is on November 25th.
