St. Natalia of Nicomedia

St. Natalia of Nicomedia and St. Adrian of Nicomedia, a young married couple, lived in the third century AD during the reign of Emperor Maximian. They had been married for only one year when Adrian, who was a Herculian Guard overseeing the persecution of Christians, decided to convert to Christianity. This resulted in him being cruelly tortured and having his limbs severed before being beheaded. His young wife Natalia was by his side throughout, encouraging him to stand firm in his faith, as she too was a believer. She retrieved one of Adrian’s hands and fled to Byzantium where she soon died and was buried with the martyrs. Her feast day is remembered on December 1st. In church art such as stained glass windows, St. Natalia is usually pictured together with her husband, St. Adrian.
