St. Patricia

Patricia was an Italian virgin and saint of the seventh century AD. According to tradition she was of noble birth and may have been related to the Roman emperor or a descendant of Constantine the Great. In stained glass art she is sometimes seen wearing a crown, showing her nobility. St. Patricia fled to Rome to become a nun in order to escape an arranged marriage. She received the veil from Pope Liberius. When her father died she returned to her native Constantinople to renounce her rights to the crown and to distribute her wealth to the poor. Then she returned to Italy and was planning a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. However the ship in which she was travelling was wrecked during a terrible storm and St. Patricia took refuge on a small island. She died soon after from disease. Her feast day is August 25th and she is the co-patron saint of Naples, together with St. Januarius.
