Catholic Stained Glass: The Last Supper

The Last Supper Stunningly Depicted in Stained Glass Art

No stained glass gallery of Christian art would be complete without artistic representations of The Last Supper. This event described in great detail in the Bible was the last time Jesus broke bread with His disciples before His betrayal by Judas and His crucifixion. It is a popular theme for Christian stained glass windows. Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting is the work most people connect to the Biblical event, but numerous other painters and stained glass artists have visualized and brought this event to life as well. Ecclesiastic stained glass windows portraying The Last Supper show the basis for one of the most important practices in the Christian faith: the Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion.

This stained glass depiction of the Last Supper resembles the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci.

The Story Of The Last Supper

Accounts of The Last Supper are found in the Gospels of Luke, Matthew, and Mark. This meal shared by Jesus with the Twelve Apostles is significant because it will be the final time these twelve pillars of the Christian faith and the Messiah will eat and drink together. Jesus knows what He is about to face, a fact that is evident in the words spoken by Him during The Last Supper. He tells the apostles that He will be betrayed by one among them, and that He will soon have to give up His life so that all of mankind’s sins can be forgiven.

During that final meal, Christ gives instructions on how His deeds should be remembered and His sacrifice honored once He is gone. He presents bread to the disciples, telling them: “This is My body.” About the wine that is drunk during the meal, He says, “This is my blood.” Then, He speaks the words still honored by the faithful today every time they take a host or a sip of wine from a chalice during mass: “Do this in memory of Me.”

Stained glass art of The Last Supper can be crafted to create imposing cathedral stained glass windows or a smaller illuminated altar front or Eucharist table. Whatever the application, stain glass featuring this theme helps show the significance of The Last Supper and the importance of remembering this event and the sacrifice made willingly by the Savior.
