Feast Day of Saint Charles Borromeo Celebrated in Stained Glass

St. Charles Borromeo, the Cardinal Archbishop of Milan from 1564 to 1584, is revered by Catholics as the patron saint of learning and the arts.  Best known as a reformer and defender of the traditional church, his feast day is celebrated on November 4.  He has been the object of classic art portrayals throughout the ages, and he is memorialized in stained glass art from Stained Glass Inc.

Born in the Italian family castle of Count Gilbert Borromeo and Margaret Medici, Saint Charles Borromeo was the nephew of Pope Pius IV.  Dependent on his nephew for counsel as well as administration of the state of the Church, Pius IV named Charles Secretary of State and, later, Cardinal and Archbishop of Milan.

Among the important improvements initiated by Saint Charles Borromeo in Milan as part of his bishopric were raising the effectiveness of the diocese according to the scriptures, strengthening morals and proper behavior among the clergy, the building of more seminaries to improve education of the clergy, and fostering a strong foundation for religious instruction of children.  Thus, he is credited with creation of the concept of “Sunday School,” as Christians know it today.  In classic art, Saint Charles Borromeo is often portrayed in the red garb of a Cardinal, and the artisans in the studios of Stained Glass Inc. have designed a perfect tribute to him, holding a bishop’s crosier and framed in the ornate style of traditional stained glass, featuring brilliant, reflective color.
