New Stained Glass Designs Honor Soon to Be Sainted Pope John XXIII

Masters of the ancient art of stained glass, working in the studios of Stained Glass Inc., create unique and innovative window, door and art panels everyday.  Now, new works of stained glass art are being prepared in anticipation of the canonization of two new saints in late April, 2014.  Pope Francis announced recently that the Catholic Church will elevate Popes John XXIII and John Paul II to sainthood next spring, in celebration of their dedication to the work of God and the Church as part of their papal legacies.

Pope John XXIII, born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli in Italy in 1881, led the Catholic Church as its Pope from October of 1958 until his death at the age of 81 in 1963.  Born in what was then the kingdom of Italy, this Pope was one of 14 children in a family of humble means, sharecroppers in the region of Lombardy.  Ordained in 1904 as a priest, he served as a chaplain in the Italian Army during World War I.  After the end of the war, he was appointed to a mission in Bulgaria, the first of several missions, and was initially reluctant to accept the challenge, but chose to go, adopting the motto of “Obedience and Peace” as a guide for his life.

Expected by many to be a Pope who would act simply as caretaker for the Church’s longstanding practices, Pope John XXIII surprised many by initiating the Second Vatican Council, which brought new reforms to the Church.  A great believer in the equality of all, the words included in his encyclical Pacem in Terris, inspired Catholics throughout the world, at a time of civil unrest, “We were all made in God’s image, and thus, we are all Godly alike.”
