Beloved by Catholics the world over, St. Therese of the Child Jesus, also known as “The Little Flower,” is celebrated on her feast day every year on October 1.  Her story is depicted magnificently in many stained glass designs available at Stained Glass Inc. St. Therese’s love of doing good in small, ordinary ways touched the hearts of those around her, and the world.

Born in 1873 in France, St. Therese yearned to enter the Carmelite convent, but her family felt she lacked strength for a life as a nun. Therese became adept at silent prayer and constant communication with the Lord.

Quiet and small, Therese continued her quest to enter the convent.  Denied by local clergy, she asked the Pope himself for permission. Therese’s determination caught the attention of the Vicar General and her wish was granted, as she took her vows in 1890.  She embraced the simple, sincere qualities of a child, and fostered a desire to do God’s work in ordinary ways, inspiring many to live quiet lives of everyday sacrifice, glorifying God with small, but constant, acts of devotion.

In 1897, Therese died of tuberculosis, and her journal served as inspiration for Christians to do God’s work in their own small ways.  Her symbol, a rose, was received first by Jesuit priest Father Putigan, who began a novena to her in 1925.  The Father asked St. Therese for a single blooming rose as a sign that she had heard his prayers.  Soon after, a parishioner presented him with a blossoming rose, telling him it had dropped from a bouquet placed beneath a portrait of St. Therese.
