St. Monica

St. Monica was the Mother of St. Augustine and is also known as St. Monica of Hippo. She lived in the First Century and is remembered and honored for her outstanding Christian virtues. She is depicted in stained glass designs together with her son Augustine or in other scenes from her life. She was married to an abusive man whose difficult mother also lived with them. Through her love and devotion and ceaseless prayers Monica was able to witness the conversion of her husband and his mother a year before his death. Of her three children, Augustine proved to be the most wayward and his mother prayed fervently and faithfully for him for seventeen years before he too became converted to the Christian faith. Soon after that, St. Monica died in the year 387 AD. Augustine paid high tribute to her in his writings. She is the patroness of wives and abuse victims, and her feast day is August 27th. Have you considered placing a stained glass window or door panel of St. Monica in your mother’s room at church? Or perhaps in your prayer chapel?
