St. Philip

St. Philip the Apostle was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus in the first century AD. He was born in Bethsaida, Galilee and is featured in all four Gospels, especially the Gospel of John. He was called by Jesus and also brought Nathanael to the Lord. The name Philip is of Greek origin and implies the possibility that Philip spoke Greek. He was instrumental in bringing some Greek Jews to meet Jesus. It is believed that in later life Philip went to preach in Greece, Syria and Phrygia. According to tradition he was crucified upside down during the persecutions of Emperor Domitian. The feast day of St. Philip is May 3rd and he is the patron saint of Cape Verde, Uruguay, hatters and pastry chefs. In art and stained glass windows, St. Philip is seen as an elderly bearded saint, with his symbols which are a basket of loaves, and a tau cross. There are over forty Catholic churches in the USA named after St. Philip placing him among the top 85 most popular saints.
