Evangelists Stained Glass Windows

Stained Glass Windows featuring the Evangelists

The Four Evangelists of Christianity are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. They are important figures in the Christian faith because they authored the four Gospels of the Bible. These accounts of the remarkable life and teachings of Jesus were written to spread His ministry, so it is not surprising that the four faithful men have been honored and memorialized by stained glass artists. They may be depicted in faceted glass windows with or without the symbols they are associated with, and their names may or may not be indicated in works of stained glass.

The Story of The Evangelists

A short description of each of the four evangelists is provided below:

  • Matthew: Once a tax man, Matthew willingly left his former life behind to become one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. In some pieces of stained glass art, he is shown holding a money bag, a symbol of his life before he committed himself to spreading the word of the Lord. The figure most associated with Matthew is a winged man, something included in many stained glass church windows honoring the disciple.
  • Mark: Unlike Matthew, Mark was not one of the Apostles of Jesus. He was a follower of the Apostle Peter and is considered one of the Seventy Disciples. The symbol used by stained glass artists to represent this Evangelist is the winged lion, which signifies courage.
  • Luke: This devoted follower of Christ and author was a doctor during his life on Earth. In addition to the Gospel of Luke, it’s believed that he also wrote the Acts of the Apostles. The winged ox is the creature connected to this Evangelist, a being that signifies both strength and sacrifice.
  • John: He was not only the author of the fourth gospel that focuses on the divine nature of Christ, but also one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. The majestic eagle is the sign of John. This bird  is associated with the sky and the heavens, the place where Christians believe God the Father dwells.
