St. Angela Merici

St. Angela Merici was an Italian religious leader and saint born in 1474. Her parents died when she was fifteen, leaving her and an older sister as orphans. Angela was very disturbed when her sister died suddenly without receiving the Last Sacraments and she prayed fervently for her sister’s soul. In response she received a vision in which she was told that her sister was in Heaven with the saints. When Angela was twenty, she began teaching young girls in her home which she turned into a school. She later founded the Company of St. Ursula, a group of women who were consecrated to God and dedicated to the service of their neighbor, but would remain in their own homes and live a life of celibacy. By the time St. Angela died at the age of 66, there were 24 branches of the Company serving the church. Her attributes are a cloak and a ladder which can be seen in artworks and stained glass windows showing St. Angela. She is the patron saint of physically challenged people, sickness and loss of parents and her feast day is January 27th.
