St. Phoebe

The meaning of the Greek name Phoebe is “The Shining One”. St. Phoebe certainly lived up to her name as she played an important role in the church at Cenchreae in the port of Corinth during the first century AD. In the Biblical book of Romans she is described by St. Paul as a deaconess and a helper or patroness of the church which met in her home. She was entrusted by Paul to carry his letter to the church in Rome, and he recommended her to them saying that they should help her, just as she has helped him and many others. St. Phoebe is commemorated on her feast day which is September 3rd. She is depicted in stained glass art works either alone, holding a cross, or in a group listening to St. Paul.
