Christian Stained Glass Windows: The Call of the Disciples

Christ calls His Disciples in Stained Glass

The Twelve Apostles of Jesus were the men who were closest to Him–both in body and in spirit–during His ministry here on Earth. Church stained glass showing Jesus with His disciples is often used to illustrate some of the most significant events described in the Bible, but these types of art glass windows accomplish so much more. All Christians are disciples of Jesus–during our lives we are all called to follow and serve Him. Faceted glass windows showing the disciples can serve as an example of the love, devotion, trust, and unconditional loyalty we should all try to emulate in our commitment to God.

This cathedral style stained glass window features Jesus calling Andrew and Peter to follow Him.

The Story of the Call of the Disciples

The calling of Simon, Andrew, James, and John is described in Mark 1: 16-20. The Bible tells us that Jesus was walking along the Sea of Galilee when he encountered the brothers Simon and Andrew. Though these fishermen were busy casting their nets they dropped everything the moment Jesus asked these disciples to follow Him. As Jesus assured them, they would soon be transformed from ordinary fishermen to “fishers of men.” Soon after, He came across James and John–also brothers. In the midst of mending their nets with their father and the family’s servants, the brothers walked away from all they knew as soon as the Messiah called to them. The remaining eight Apostles were recruited by Jesus during a visit to Capernaum.

Only too willing to leave behind everything they knew and all the possessions they had amassed during their lives, the 12 Apostles worked tirelessly to spread the Gospel of the Lord. As witnesses to the miracles He performed, believers in His teachings, and objects of His unending love, the disciples were able to help spread the joyous news of the Messiah far and wide. They also embraced the commitment of Jesus to be kind to all people and help the most destitute souls of the world. Those who today proclaim to love the Lord should strive to do the same, a simple truth that can be brought home with windows for the soul that show the Apostles and their Savior in multi-faceted color and light.

Several of Christ's disciples are pictured in this stained glass window. panel.
