Sea of Galilee Stained Glass Art

Stories from the Sea of Galilee

Situated in northern Israel, the Sea of Galilee was much more than a body of water casually mentioned in the Bible. It served as a backdrop for the Calling of the Disciples and was also where Jesus performed several of His miracles. Stained glass church windows featuring scenes from the Sea of Galilee may show Jesus calming the storm at sea, calling the fishermen from the shore to come follow Him in His ministry, or walking on water. Many stained glass artists use numerous rich shades of blue to represent the ocean waters in these works, which makes them a feast for the eyes and the soul.

The Story of the Sea of Galilee

Although there is no story in the Bible officially known as “the Sea of Galilee,” the waters of the ocean and the land surrounding it served as the setting for several miracles and events in the life of Jesus. One of these was the Calling of the Disciples. Soon after He had been baptized in the Jordon River, Jesus called forth the men who would help Him spread the word of God. Jesus encountered four of these men as he walked along the Sea of Galilee. They were humble fishermen, and they willingly dropped their nets and left behind everything they knew to become followers of Christ.

Several of Christ’s miracles also took place in the waters and on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. In the Gospel of Mark (4 : 35-40) we learn that Jesus and His followers were traveling across the Sea of Galilee in several boats when a massive storm arose. Those traveling with Jesus were terrified and woke the sleeping Savior. Once He told the storm to stop, the wind died and the sea became calm and smooth. The Gospel of Matthew, Mark, and John all contain accounts of Jesus walking on water towards the disciples, who had set sail without the Messiah and encountered a storm. Matthew’s account states that the Lord used His powers to allow Peter to walk on the water as well. Finally, it was close to the shores of the Sea of Galilee where Jesus performed the miracle known as the Feeding of the 5000.
