Saint Peter Stained Glass Windows

Saint Peter Religious Stained Glass Windows

Saint Peter was one of Christ’s Twelve Apostles, and Gospel accounts in the New Testament suggest the disciple was also one of His most favored. Saint Peter art glass windows are routinely inspired by information provided about this righteous man in the Bible. Saint Peter is often regarded as the first pope, an office granted to him by Christ Himself. It is for this reason that Saint Peter is frequently depicted holding the “keys of Heaven” in Catholic stained glass. Like Christ, Saint Peter could heal the sick, a miracle that is the theme of many Christian stained glass windows. Works of Saint Peter stained glass are excellent choices whenever church leaders are looking for a way to honor those who played a key role in the development and dissemination of Christianity, but are especially fitting for parishes named in honor of this important saint.

The Story of Saint Peter

Before becoming one of Christ’s Apostles, Saint Peter was a humble fisherman better known by the name of Simon. The Gospels of Matthew and Mark both recount how Peter was called to be part of Christ’s ministry. As Jesus was walking along the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew throwing nets into the sea. The Savior said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Without hesitation, both men heeded His call.

The Bible contains a wealth of information about Saint Peter. One exchange between the apostle and Jesus described in the Gospel of Matthew (16 : 13-20) shows just how favorably he was looked upon by the Savior. When Simon identified Jesus as the Christ and the Son of God, He described Peter as “the rock” on which He would build His church and the person to whom He would give the keys of Heaven.

Other important events in the life of Saint Peter include walking on water, healing the sick with his shadow, and allowing a crippled beggar to walk again simply by pulling him to his feet. Saint Peter was the first person to actually enter Christ’s empty tomb, and Jesus appeared to Peter in His resurrected form. It’s thought that, like Christ, Peter was crucified. There is no denying the lasting legacy of this martyred saint, one that is reflected in part by the many works of Christian stained glass that bear his likeness.
